Turning up your monitor's gamma, brightness, or contrast does not give you HDR. Gamma is the curve that decides how the mid-tones of a standard (SDR) picture map to light — push it and you just redistribute the same limited range of brightness, which tends to crush shadow detail or blow out highlights rather than add range.

Real HDR (high dynamic range) is a different thing end to end: a much wider span of brightness — highlights that can be many times brighter than SDR while shadows stay deep — plus a wider color range and usually 10-bit color, sent as an actual HDR signal (HDR10, Dolby Vision) the game or video outputs. It needs a display that can physically produce that brightness and contrast; a panel that cannot will render HDR as washed-out or dim no matter how you set it. …
